This article explains how to open multiple instances of your Mozilla application at the same time, using different profiles.

For new versions of Firefox use the following command: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -P -no-remote &> /dev/null

You can use the Multifox extension in order to have two separate instances of Firefox that do not share cookies, but by still using only one profile.

Copy and rename your main profile (as many times as you want), then run extra instances of Firefox using these new-but-identical profiles.

Firefox Portable is a 3rd party build that has its own way of launching multiple instances, far different that the official Firefox builds do.
